Time Lapse Tour of Yosemite National Park by Henry Jun Wah Lee

Posted in Art by ferilli on August 29, 2010

This incredible video of Yosemite National Park was shot by Henry Jun Wah Lee in late May of 2010. Lee guides us through some of Yosemite’s most remarkable destinations like Cook’s Meadow, Bridalveil Falls, Nevada Falls, El Capitan, Yosemite Falls, and, of course, Half Dome. Favorite part? When the morning fog magically blankets Half Done.

Studioilse w084t Task Lamp by Studioilse for Wästberg

Posted in Interior//Design by ferilli on August 19, 2010

Winner of the Good Design Award and shortlisted as one of the 25 Best Design Objects by Monocle, the Studioilse w084t task lamp is made from natural materials and sturdy construction.

“Materials have hidden messages. These create a powerful link to our emotional psyches and shape our connection to daily life. Our light is a sturdy friend, unpretentious and always there for us. We have chosen honest materials that carry clear messages: iron for its feelings of stability, reliability, trust; wood with its warmth and life, and mineral plastic for its intimate glow, as well as its tactility. Then we have put these three together for a certain oddness. This is because there’s an innate awkwardness in the directional light that we wanted to amplify-rather as with people this is a sympathetic quality, not a sin.”

Cook Custom Choppers Rambler

Posted in Motorcycles by ferilli on August 15, 2010

Considering America’s well-known love affair with custom motorcycles, you might think that the Official World Championship of Custom Bike Building would be dominated by U.S.-based builders. Interestingly, though, this year marks the first time the top prize has been won by an American, in this case Dave Cook of Cook Custom Choppers in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

The winning bike is called Rambler, and it’s definitely not the typical custom Harley. In fact, it’s not even powered by a V-twin engine. Instead, an air-cooled 550cc four-cylinder engine from International sends power through a modified BMW gearbox and shaft drive to the 21-inch rear wheel.

FERRARI F40

Posted in Cars by ferilli on August 3, 2010

There are many reasons to why the Ferrari F40 is often hailed as one of the great modern super cars. For starters even before the F40 had an engine or wheels it was already being talked of as pioneering due to the intensity of the aerodynamic testing its body shell was going through, this same body shell included a good deal of kevlar which helped to add as much strength Ferrari could for minimum of weight.

So its probably off little surprise to hear that when the first one rolled off the production line in 1987 it immediately held the title of ‘the worlds fastest street legal production car’ (as well as the most expensive) and did so till 1989.

But for us what makes the F40 so special is that it was the last car that the 90 year old Enzo Ferrari commissioned before his death, which makes the F40 an extremely fitting tribute to Enzo and everything that Ferrari stood for.

The Namib Desert Indoors by Álvaro Sánchez-Montañés

Posted in Art, Photography by ferilli on August 2, 2010

Inspired by an article he read about abandoned diamond mines in Namibia, photographer Álvaro Sánchez-Montañés wanted to learn more. In his magazine he had only stumbled across one picture of Kolmanskop, a now ghost town in southern Namibia that had once been a rich mining village. Online he found a treasure trove of interesting photos and at that moment promised himself that he would one day experience the Namib desert for himself. He would see with his very own eyes how the desert sands’ had reclaimed its space.

When he got there, he found “the beauty in the abandoned, of the useless, of the time passing by.” Left at the mercy of the Namib desert, the winds had filled the rooms of the deserted buildings with sand. The diamond village that had once been thriving was now more like a surreal dream.

Art Warehouse in Boeotia by A31 Architecture

Between olive, oleander and cypress trees, in a 4000 m2 plot and a few meters away from his dwelling in Dilesi, Boeotia, the ancient Delion, the erection of the new workshop of painter and sculptor Alexandros Liapis was determined. A part of the landscape was incorporated in the open-space sculpture gallery, hosting the artist’s creations. The basic criteria of the new structure’s synthesis were: the economy of its realization means, its construction honesty and discipline, its plasticity which would converse with the spirit of the Greek landscape. The new structure is a shell comprised of fair-faced reinforced concrete, completed in three separate phases. The dome, a timeless and interregional architectural coronation element spanning from antiquity to Modernism, interacts with the intimate space of the artist’s house, the “cell”.
